 Mariska Hargitay Reveals Identity of Biological Father After Family Secret

Mariska Hargitay, renowned for her role as Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU, has unveiled a deeply personal family secret in her directorial debut documentary, My Mom Jayne.  Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2025, the film reveals that her biological father is not Mickey Hargitay, the man who raised her, but Nelson Sardelli, a former Las Vegas entertainer.  

A Hidden Truth

For over three decades, Mariska believed Mickey Hargitay, a Hungarian-American actor and bodybuilder, was her biological father.  It wasn't until she was 25 that she learned the truth about her paternity.  Five years later, she met Sardelli, confronting complex emotions and an identity crisis.  

The Documentary: My Mom Jayne

Initially intended to explore the life of her mother, Jayne Mansfield, the documentary evolved into a personal journey of self-discovery for Mariska.  The film features candid interviews with family members, including her half-sisters from Sardelli's side, and previously unseen footage of Mansfield.

Despite the revelation, Mariska maintained a deep bond with Mickey Hargitay, who raised her and her siblings after Mansfield's tragic death in a car accident in 1967.  She credits Mickey for instilling resilience and determination in her, values that have guided her both personally and professionally.
