John Brenkus, Host of Emmy-Winning Sports Science, Dies at 54 after Long Battle with Depression, Leaving Fans Shocked


John Brenkus, the visionary co-creator and host of ESPN's Emmy-winning series Sport Science, passed away on May 31, 2025, at the age of 54 after a prolonged battle with depression.  His death was announced by his family and Brinx.TV, the digital platform he founded, through a heartfelt statement shared on social media.  

A Pioneer in Sports Media

Born in 1971 in Vienna, Virginia, Brenkus co-founded BASE Productions and launched Sport Science in 2007 on Fox Sports Net.  The show later moved to ESPN, where it became a cultural phenomenon by blending physics, biomechanics, and cutting-edge graphics to analyze athletic performance.  Over its run, the series produced more than 1,800 segments and earned six Sports Emmy Awards.  

In 2013, Brenkus expanded his media footprint by founding Brinx.TV, a platform that hosted shows like The Goat Code, which he described as “Sport Science on steroids.”  He also authored the bestselling book The Perfection Point and hosted The Brink of Midnight podcast, where he explored pivotal moments in the lives of athletes and entertainers.  


A Personal Struggle Behind the Spotlight

Despite his professional success, Brenkus faced profound personal challenges.  In a 2023 interview, he candidly discussed his struggles with depression, revealing that he had experienced suicidal thoughts and sought help from mental health professionals.  He credited his dog for intervening during a suicide attempt, which led him to reach out to his mother and seek professional help.  

His openness about mental health resonated with many and highlighted the importance of seeking support.  His family emphasized this in their statement, urging anyone struggling with depression to seek help.  

Remembering a Legacy

Brenkus is survived by his wife and two children.  His passing has elicited an outpouring of tributes from fans, athletes, and colleagues who admired his innovative approach to sports media and his courage in discussing mental health.  

His legacy endures through his groundbreaking work in sports science and his advocacy for mental health awareness.
