Mount Etna Eruption 2025: Massive Volcanic Blast Sends Tourists Fleeing in Sicily

On June 2, 2025, Mount Etna, Europe's tallest and most active volcano located in Sicily, erupted dramatically, prompting tourists to flee the area.  The eruption began around 11:24 AM local time, producing a massive plume of ash, gas, and volcanic rock that soared approximately 6.5 kilometers into the sky  .

The eruption was characterized by intense strombolian activity, including lava fountains and pyroclastic flows, likely triggered by a partial collapse of the volcano's southeast crater  . Approximately 40 tourists were on the volcano at the time, with many captured on video fleeing down the slopes as ash and smoke billowed overhead.

Despite the dramatic visuals, there have been no reports of injuries.  Authorities have stated that the lava flows remain confined within natural boundaries, posing no immediate threat to nearby residents.  However, a red aviation alert was issued due to the ash plume, although operations at Catania Airport continue with active monitoring  .

Mount Etna is one of the world's most active volcanoes, with frequent eruptions.  This latest event is the most significant since 2014, underscoring the volcano's persistent activity and the importance of vigilance for those living nearby or visiting the area  .
